The important exclusion

Pre-existing conditions

A pre-existing condition is generally an illness, injury, or related symptom that existed or showed signs before coverage began or during a waiting period.

Diagnosis is not always required

An insurer may look at symptoms, veterinary notes, test results, or treatment history—not just a formal diagnosis. Ask for the policy’s exact definition.

Curable versus incurable

Some plans may reconsider a resolved condition after a symptom-free period; chronic or recurring conditions are more commonly excluded for the life of the policy.

Enroll before a problem appears

Pet insurance generally works best when purchased while your pet is healthy. Never delay needed veterinary care to try to preserve eligibility.

Request a medical-record review

If available, use an insurer’s medical-history review before relying on a policy. Keep your pet’s records and ask questions in writing.
