Plain-English guide
Pet insurance coverage, decoded
Insurance terminology can make a simple decision feel impossible. Here are the terms that shape what you pay and what your policy may reimburse.
Deductible
The amount you pay toward eligible veterinary costs before reimbursement begins. It may be annual or per condition, depending on the plan.
Reimbursement rate
The percentage of eligible costs the insurer pays after the deductible. A 90% rate does not mean every invoice is reimbursed at 90%.
Annual limit
The maximum an insurer will reimburse during a policy year. Unlimited plans have no stated annual cap, but still follow policy terms and exclusions.
Waiting period
The time between enrollment and when particular benefits begin. Accident, illness, and orthopedic waiting periods can be different.
Eligible expenses
The veterinary services a plan covers. Read the policy for definitions, exclusions, exam-fee rules, and whether routine wellness care requires an add-on.
